About the opportunity

The Library is seeking a strategic, energetic, and creative leader and strong children’s, youth, and library advocate to join its management team. Reporting to the Director, Neighbourhood & Youth Services, the Associate Director is responsible for oversight of children’s and teen services and acts as an advocate for children’s and teen services system-wide. The Associate Director acts for the Director, Neighbourhood & Youth Services in their absence, serves as the designate for the Director for select projects and initiatives, and participates in workforce planning for neighbourhood service areas.

 

In cooperation with the Managers, the Associate Director ensures efficient and effective delivery of library service at the Central Library and branches and will have the opportunity to contribute to the development and advancement of system wide initiatives and take on special projects.

 

The Associate Director is responsible for system-wide development, service planning, implementation, and evaluation of policy, procedures, and customer service practices in the following areas:

• Services to Children, Teens and Families at the Central Library, 20 neighbourhood branches, and through the Library’s website.

• The Early Years, Middle Years and Teen Services teams

• The Children’s Library and Teen Services delivered at the Central Library

• City-wide Community Engagement service planning and strategy development

 

In the next three years VPL will enlarge and renovate The Children’s Library to add capacity for group programming as well as interactive and welcoming spaces for children and families. The Library will also begin to enhance branch spaces across the city to include early-literacy learning environments that encourage children and caregivers to engage in play-based learning and activities that foster the development of emergent literacy skills. The Associate Director, Neighbourhood & Youth Services leads staff in the ongoing goal of improving spaces for children and families to build belonging and engagement while supporting learning.  

 

Maintaining strong community relationships and partnerships with the Vancouver School Board and other agencies is fundamental in this role and the Associate Director will represent the Library in a leadership capacity on City and community-based initiatives and committees.

 

The incumbent directly oversees four supervisors including one unit head, two assistant managers, and one clerical supervisor, and indirectly oversees the work of over 40 full time equivalent employees.

 

We require

A Master’s Degree in Library and Information Sciences from an ALA accredited library school, and significant recent relevant experience, including at least three years of progressively responsible experience in supervisory and management positions.  This position requires:

·         Strong public service orientation and demonstrated understanding of social inclusion and public libraries.

·         A proven record or knowledge of innovative children’s services and early childhood development

·         Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills.

·         Excellent leadership and project management skills

·         Demonstrated ability to develop relationships and thrive in a collaborative environment

·         Human Resources, Labour Relations, and Change Management experience
