Main Purpose and Function
Britannia is a unique community centre that provides services in the Grandview Woodland and Strathcona neighbourhoods.  In this role, you are supporting the Weaving Communities Together (WCT) Project funded by the Federal Government through the Urban Planning for Indigenous Peoples Program of Indian and Northern Affairs Canada. This role has been developed with a vision for indigenizing efforts, that has in the past successfully woven together a community of many different cultural identities coming together as strong community, which reflects the successes of this position, and this program, as it speaks to Reconciliation endeavors here at Britannia. In this role you are supporting the goals and objectives of WCT. The incumbent will need to be able to work in a community development and collaborative environment which changes depending on the needs of the project. They must be able to multi-task between mentoring, networking, outreach, event planning and reporting back to the community.  The work comprises of support for individuals and groups, outreach, event and program planning.  Considerable independence of judgement and action is exercised in the various aspects of the work, with work subject to final review by a supervisor. The funding for the position is in place until March 2024 and subject to an annual review by the community as it is dependent upon certain variables such as future funding applications and what programs best suit the community.


Specific Duties and Responsibilities            

  • Ensure that the objectives of the WCT federal grant are met including the implementation of an Indigenous Community Advisory Team, Cultural workshops and gatherings; 
  • Establishes and maintains rapport with Elders and folks of all backgrounds and ages in the community;
  • Maintains close working relationships with a wide variety of contacts and agencies engaged in multicultural and intergenerational services; identifies and recommends and implements programs and implements programs;
  • Support a team in the planning, promotion, implementation and supervision of WCT Project  activities including events, workshops, and forums; communication development (videos, presentations, etc.); Team-building, leadership and skills development; involvement with local organizations; and delivery of inclusion and capacity-building workshops with local organizations;
  • Reports on the priorities and aspirations of local Elders and Community members gathered through a variety of engagement activities including sharing circles, forums and workshops;
  • Identify additional training and capacity-building opportunities for Elders and Community members to support their leadership, organizing and participation in organizational and neighbourhood-level processes;
  • Provide one-to-one mentorship and tailored supports to participants, facilitating opportunities and the development of capacity and skills ;
  • Engage partners to support Elders and Community members in creating new and innovative pathways for service, self-expression, advocacy and participation;
  • Provide information regarding the WCT Project to interested groups and individuals;
  • Recruits, instructs and supervises the work of one or more Program Assistant positions, and performs a variety of clerical and reporting duties related to the work;
  • Writes reports and fund development applications;
  • Performs related work as required.  


Education and Certification:

  • Completion of a post-secondary diploma or degree in recreation or related discipline plus some related experience OR an equivalent combination of training and experience;
  • Driver’s License for the Province of British Columbia;
  • First Aid – Level I preferred.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Sound knowledge of the safety practices, policies, regulations and rules applicable to the work performed;
  • Working knowledge of the fundamentals of Indigenous values and cultural protocols, Indigenous program leadership and previous experience working with youth, Elders and seniors;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of internal and external contacts and to deal with them with tact and diplomacy;
  • Ability to coordinate, deliver and oversee activities and programs offered in an assigned area;
  • Ability to plan, assign, review and supervise the work of one or more Program Assistants;
  • Ability to maintain records and perform a variety of routine clerical and writing tasks related to the work performed;
  • Considerable knowledge of the philosophy and objectives of planned Elders and Community  programs;
  • Knowledge and experience of Indigenous cultures and history is preferred;
  • Understanding of the barriers to participation in mainstream settings is preferred;
  • Proven success in working with Indigenous communities;
  • Working knowledge of the fundamentals of program leadership and recreational instruction;
  • Ability to meet and deal tactfully with diverse communities and maintain control and exercise discipline with tact and consistency;
  • Ability to do outreach and engagement to excluded population in the catchment area;
  • Ability to support staff in the identification of barriers to participation for excluded populations;
  • Working knowledge of the safety practices, policies, regulations and rules applicable to the work performed;
  • Ability to maintain statistical, financial and clerical records and write reports.
