Planning Analyst - Park Board for Northeast False Creek

Main Purpose & Function

This position will provide an excellent opportunity for an individual to work amongst a highly motivated multi-disciplinary, cross-departmental project team and enhance their parks and recreation planning, design and research experience within major projects. One of the key functions of this position will be to support the conceptual design and public engagement process for the parks in Northeast False Creek, including engagement with the local First Nations.

 

The Planning Analyst position will work independently and as part of a team to support planning, research, design and engagement activities that provide, preserve and advocate for parks and recreation to benefit all people, communities and the environment.

 

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

Reporting to a Senior Planner, the Planning Analyst is responsible for data collection, community engagement logistics, planning and research activities that support the planning for the renewal, upgrade and growth of Vancouver’s parks and recreation system. The work of the Planning Analyst supports the day-to-day administration, project management, cross-departmental coordination within the City of Vancouver and Vancouver Park Board, and stakeholder and public engagement work carried out by park planners and landscape architects in a diverse range of park, recreation facility and environmentally-based major projects, policy and strategies.

 

The Planning Analyst is required to write reports and memos (that are presented to senior management and Park Board Commissioners by senior staff), and prepare graphic presentations.

The Planning Analyst deals with external consultants, develops studies and research, and prepares and delivers presentations to internal audiences. The incumbent is also responsible for tracking and reporting project financial performance and accounts in SAP.

 

The position also implements community engagement plans and undertakes event planning, preparation of engagement materials, survey design, facilitation, note taking and summarizing of results. The position liaises with project stakeholders and advisory groups, external agencies, the non-profit sector and other levels of government.

 

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • University degree in landscape architecture, planning or related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in park, recreation and environment planning, design, policy, and program research and analysis specifically relating to current-term and long-range planning
  • Experience in data analysis and interpretation, demographic analysis, report writing and research coordination related to urban park, recreation and environment is required

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Strong knowledge of urban park, recreation and environmental planning, design and influencing factors including demographic issues, planning and development trends.
  • Excellent written, verbal and graphic communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to communicate to a diverse range of audiences
  • Excellent information and data management and analytical skills, including the ability to interpret census data
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to adapt to priorities and meet prescribed deadlines in a changing environment
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment as part of a team and ability to manage competing pressures
  • Ability to problem-solve, be resourceful and efficient to obtain data and research within existing frameworks
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel,  PowerPoint),  Adobe Suite (Acrobat, Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator) AutoCAD, GIS software and SAP is preferred
