City of Reconciliation

The City of Vancouver was designated a City of Reconciliation when the Reconciliation framework was adopted by Council on July 8, 2014.

As a City of Reconciliation, we will:

  • Form a sustained relationship of mutual respect and understanding with xwməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam Indian Band), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish Nation), sə̓lílwətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh Nation), and the urban Indigenous community, including key agencies
  • Incorporate Indigenous perspectives into our work and decisions
  • Provide services that benefit members of the diverse Indigenous Peoples living in the city

Our Reconciliation efforts, to date, are based on our commitment to working towards Reconciliation with xwməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam Indian Band), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish Nation), sə̓lílwətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh Nation), and urban Indigenous communities.

  • Strengthen relationships with xwməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam Indian Band), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish Nation), sə̓lílwətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh Nation), and urban Indigenous Peoples
  • Implement our strategy on United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People
  • Develop ongoing, reciprocal relationships that recognize and uphold Indigenous rights
  • Continue to implement the Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action that are within our jurisdiction.
  • Implement all articles contained within the United Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), within our jurisdiction, through our UNDRIP Strategy and working towards an action plan.
  • Develop a report to identify how our work aligns with the Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women and Girls Calls for Justice and Red Women Rising recommendations.

We recognize there is a lot of work to be done to improve relationships with Indigenous people and are committed to working with xwməθkwəy̓əm (musqueam Indian Band), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish Nation), səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh Nation), and urban Indigenous Peoples.

We are committed to advancing reconciliation, equity, and anti-racism for all people in Vancouver, and are an employer member of the Canadian Centre for Diversity and Inclusion. We always strive to improve and work towards a fairer, safer, and more inclusive city.
