Job Summary:
Reporting to the Manager, VPL Security Services, the Assistant Security Coordinator supports security operations primarily at the Central Library by working closely with VPL staff and contracted security personnel to maintain a safe, secure, and welcoming environment for patrons and employees.
This position assists the VPL security team (Manager and 3 Security Coordinators) by helping implement established security procedures, responding to incidents, supporting emergency and evacuation processes, coordinating information flow between library staff and contracted guards, maintaining documentation and reports, and providing day-to-day operational support for safety and security functions at the Central Library.
The Assistant Security Coordinator does not directly supervise contract guards, but acts as a key support role, ensuring consistency in communication, incident response, and safety practices throughout the facility.
The incumbent is a member of the library exempt management team and participates in the creation and maintenance of a respectful and inclusionary workplace.
The incumbent will be required to work outside of ‘normal office hours’ (including partial weekends, statutory holidays, late evening and/or early morning work). A flexible and team focused approach is required.
Job Requirements:
Education/Qualifications:
- Completion of the twelfth grade
- Basic Security Training (BST)
- Enhanced Police Information Check
- Additional courses in a related field are considered an asset
- Valid BC Driver's License preferred
Experience:
- Three years recent relevant experience in the provision of security services, including experience in a supervisory position; demonstrated leadership skills
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Thorough knowledge of current trends and industry best practices in areas of responsibility
- Working knowledge of the objectives, organization, procedures, services, and resources of the Library
- Ability to manage building and Library security, Fire Plan, and evacuation control issues
- Ability to be innovative and flexible in a rapidly changing library environment, and to assist staff to participate in and be open to change
- Demonstrated level of professionalism and confidentiality with strong ethics
- Excellent communication skills both oral and written
- Excellent conflict management and problem-solving skills, along with the ability to effectively defuse threatening situations
- Proficient with programs including Microsoft Office and Lenel “On Guard”
- Ability to plan, organize and carry out assigned duties and responsibilities with minimal supervision

Salary: $60,011 - $75,019 annually

Sunday: 9:30am – 6:00pm
Monday: 12:00pm – 8:30pm
Tuesday: 9:30am – 6:00pm
Wednesday: 9:30am – 6:00pm
Thursday: 9:30am – 6:00pm
