Commitment to Reconciliation

Vancouver City Council designated Vancouver a City of Reconciliation on July 8, 2014. Since then, the City has worked to implement a Reconciliation Strategy across all areas and departments. The City became a national leader in reconciliation and Indigenous rights by working with the local Nations to develop the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) Strategy, approved by the Councils of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations, as well as Vancouver City Council on October 25, 2022.

The City’s vision is to form relationships of mutual respect and understanding with the local First Nations and Urban Indigenous community, incorporate an Indigenous perspective into our work and decisions, and provide services that benefit members of the local First Nations and Urban Indigenous community.

We are committed to strengthening local First Nations and Urban Indigenous relations, promoting Indigenous peoples’ arts, culture, awareness, and understanding and incorporating Indigenous perspectives for effective City services.

The City takes cultural safety and respect for Indigenous rights very seriously. We actively work across departments to develop an atmosphere of respect and understanding for Indigenous workers and community members, including taking meaningful action to address missteps and take opportunities for growth.

The City’s COVID-19 vaccination policy is currently suspended and as a result, vaccination against COVID-19 is not required at this time. However, should circumstances change and the City deem it necessary to re-introduce such policy, you may be required to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 in order to be eligible to continue performing your duties.
