Main Purpose & Function
The Children’s Activity Leader performs recreational work in implementing and leading a variety of activities for children participating in Out of School child care program at Ray-Cam Cooperative Centre in the Downtown Eastside.  The position is primarily involved in delivering activities which will promote child development and learning.
 
Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Delivers a variety of children’s activities such as arts and crafts, music, storytelling, organizes daily routines and makes modifications as appropriate; assists in or independently plans and implements group activities.
  • Assists the Childcare Supervisor in the planning, coordination and assessment of childcare programs and activities to promote the development and learning of typical and special needs children; assists in providing training and work direction to substitutes, students and volunteers.
  • Assists in identifying children with special needs; administers prescribed routines and operates adaptive equipment.
  • Informs parents of their child’s progress and of any concerns; provides guidance and advice to parents as required.
  • Assists in identifying and reporting cases of child abuse; as directed, liaises with a variety of agencies and consultants involved with the families of special needs children such as social workers, public health nurses, physical and occupational therapists.
  • Assists in the organization and implementation of various family programs and events; prepares promotional materials such as posters and flyers.
  • Enforces rules and regulations and ensures that required health precautions and safety standards are observed; administers first aid as required; recommends the acquisition of materials and equipment.
  • Maintains a variety of records related to the work.
  • Sets up equipment and furniture for activities; plans and prepares nutritional snacks; performs cleaning tasks in rooms and playground areas; opens and secures the building.
  • Other duties/responsibilities as assigned

 

Qualifications
Education and Experience:

  • Completion of a certificate program such as Responsible Adult or ECE-Assistant and some related experience, particularly in working with special needs children; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. If the candidate is certified with the ECE Registry the position is eligible for the Provincial ECE Wage Enhancement
  • Valid First Aid Certificate.
  • Valid Food Safe Certificate.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Sound knowledge of the fundamentals of recreational instruction as they pertain to a child care program.
  • Sound knowledge of the policies, regulations, and rules applicable to the work performed.
  • Working knowledge of the principles, practices and objectives of organized community recreation related to a child care program.
  • Working knowledge of the fundamentals of program leadership.
  • Working knowledge of crafts, arts and other pursuits related to children’s programs.
  • Some knowledge of modern office practices and procedures.
  • Ability to coordinate and lead program activities for children of varying ages and development levels, and to participate in program planning and assessment.
  • Ability to maintain control and exercise discipline with tact and consistency.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with parents, staff, and a variety of external contacts such as social workers and therapists.
  • Ability to provide training and work direction to substitutes and volunteers.
  • Ability to assist in identifying developmental problems in children and to apply prescribed therapies.
  • Ability to provide support and encouragement to families in crisis situations and to recommend appropriate referrals.
  • Ability to prepare a variety of records and promotional materials
  • If the candidate is certified with the ECE Registry the position is eligible for the Provincial ECE Wage Enhancement

Salary Information: Pay Grade GR-014: $29.95 to $35.09 per hour
This position is eligible for the Provincial ECE Wage Enhancement, on top of the existing pay grade, for successful candidates certified with the ECE Registry.
