Main Purpose & Function 
The Electrical Design Engineer will be responsible for delivery of electrical designs, engineering services and drafting services; Establishing and implementing electrical technical specifications, standards and related work processes; Managing the delivery of capital programs; Serving as Engineer of Record for electrical design including street lighting design, traffic signal designs and power distribution design; Exploring and implementing innovative technologies related to street/decorative lighting; Assisting in street light asset management; involving in direct supervision of a team of designers. This position also directly deals with external organizations and Business Improvement Associations in delivering electrical design services.

 

The position reports to the Senior Electrical Engineer, Electrical Design Branch and supervises Electrical Designers. Key contacts this position works with are third party utilities and telecommunication companies such as BC Hydro and Telus as well as government agencies.

 

Specific Duties & Responsibilities 

  • Seals (as P.Eng.) for electrical designs generated under direct supervision related to street lighting, poles, conduit, service panels, and luminaires.
  • Coordinates with internal and external customers to ensure that design services are provided in a timely and suitable manner, meeting project schedules
  • Assists the Manager in developing new budget requests to optimize asset management principles while aligning with City priorities
  • Explores and implements cost effective ways of delivering services
  • Adopts and implements quality control processes and procedures
  • Develops business cases and provides strategic analysis to new and emerging initiatives.
  • Establishes and maintains the City’s electrical specifications and drafting standards, and adherence to all necessary regulatory requirements, including delivery of traffic signal electrical design in alignment with Traffic and Data Management standards.
  • Supervises Electrical Designers and delivers lighting, traffic and power distribution designs
  • Serves as the Engineer of Record for electrical designs.
  • Identifies industry best practices and implements within section.
  • Partners with other government, public and private organizations related to the City’s practices with electrical design.
  • Represents the City on other committees and working groups.
  • Responds to 311 service requests related to electrical design.
  • Other duties/responsibilities as assigned

 

 

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering with a Professional Engineer designation and minimum three years’ related experience in design and construction project engineering, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience
  • Experience in managing staff
  • Registration or eligibility for registration as a Professional Engineer in British Columbia

 

 Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of electrical engineering principles, standards, and specifications, as they relate to the municipal environment (IES RP-8, Canadian Electrical code, MMCD etc)
  • Working knowledge of quality management systems, ideally EGBC’s Organizational Quality Management system
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with diverse internal and external stakeholders
  • Demonstrated organizational and time management skills in a high volume and high stress environment
  • Demonstrated commitment to customer service
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work and think strategically, including experience with business case composition and evaluation
  • Ability to work independently with little supervision

Salary Information: Pay Grade RNG-080: $99,947 to $124,934 per hour
