Main Purpose and Function
The Engineering Assistant II performs a variety of technical and clerical tasks related to processing Development, Building, and Street Use Permits. The work includes assisting with the review of plans and applications for residential and commercial sites to ensure departmental and by-law compliance, updating and coordinating site inspection records and documents, and performing field investigations to assess development site conditions.

 

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  • Routes and tracks development plans within Engineering Services
  • Receives and responds to inquiries from applicants and assesses complexity
  • Sets up site folders for active construction sites
  • Calculates various development fees 
  • Reviews and interprets technical designs
  • Estimates costs for smaller scaled assets 
  • Reviews development and building plans
  • Supports functions at the Engineering Client Services Counter
  • Updates and maintains electronic databases 
  • Provides general support to Development and Building Site Inspection sections
  • Other duties/responsibilities as assigned.

 

Qualifications
Education and Experience:

  • Completion of Grade 12 supplemented by related technical courses or an equivalent combination of education and experience 

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of relevant by-laws, codes, acts and regulations governing the work 
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings
  • Ability to perform calculations based on technical drawings and fee schedules
  • Ability to perform thorough, complete, and accurate work
  • A working knowledge of Word, Excel and Outlook 
  • Knowledge of electronic filing systems, such as VanDocs and POSSE
  • Good writing skills to maintain accurate records 
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively and respectfully with internal and external contacts
  • Ability to research and analyse information to make technical recommendations
  • Ability to work well in a team and business environment 
  • Ability to work under tight timelines and handle multiple tasks 
  • A current and valid BC driver’s license is preferred 
  • Experience with GIS, AutoCAD and the City’s electronic permitting computer programs or related systems is an asset

 

Where operationally appropriate and subject to change, the City of Vancouver has a Flexible Work Program. This program allows staff to work remotely 1 – 4 days a week from locations that are a daily commutable distance from their work at a City worksite.  At this time this position is eligible to be part of the Flexible Work Program.
