Main Purpose and Function
The Drafter supports the overall delivery of the Waterworks capital program to renew and replace aging water system infrastructure and to support development activity. The position prepares technical drawings and detailed layouts for proposed water mains, hydrant relocations, and various minor replacements and extensions of the water system; and processes requests for installation of water service connections.
Specific Duties/Responsibilities
- Creates water main design construction drawings using GIS/AutoCAD/TopoBase environment using departmental paper records and electronic databases
- Updates GIS as-built information
- Researches and provides technical and other information regarding water infrastructure for the public, city staff and private companies, providing written correspondence as required
- Undertakes quality control processes related to existing GIS data
- Makes recommendations to improve branch processes and information access needs
- Conducting site visits as required
- Coordinates with the survey team to confirm site information, order test holes, and acquire crossing permits from outside utilities and agencies.
- Reviews designs submitted by other internal branches and external utilities.
- Provides clerical support such as maintaining spreadsheets and databases
- Communicates and corresponds with the public, private companies, outside agencies and other City branches
- Other duties/responsibilities as assigned
Minimum Qualification Requirements
Education and Experience:
- Completion of Grade 12, supplemented by technical courses related to the work, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Experience preparing AutoCAD construction drawings
- Experience in layout and construction of pressurized pipe systems within an urban context
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Good knowledge of municipal design and construction of water systems
- Working knowledge of standard engineering concepts and terminology, municipal design, and construction of water systems
- Strong analytical, organizational, and interpersonal skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with a focus on customer service
- Ability to perform accurate survey work, draft simple designs, and make routine office and field engineering computations
- Ability to read and interpret engineering plans and understand specifications
- Ability to problem solve with accuracy in a technical environment
- Ability to work efficiently in a team environment with little supervision
- Ability to prioritize to meet tight time lines in a multi-task environment
- Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders
- Proficient in the use of software applications, geographical information systems and databases such as TopoBase and Hansen
- Ability to arrange suitable transportation to various work locations
Where operationally appropriate and subject to change, the City of Vancouver has a Flexible Work Program. This program allows staff to work remotely 1 – 4 days a week from locations that are a daily commutable distance from their work at a City worksite. At this time this position is eligible to be part of the Flexible Work Program.
