Main Purpose & Function
The Draftsperson is responsible for providing drafting support for the Streets Design branch. The position processes topographic survey using engineering software and develops design and construction drawings. The position works in accordance with EGBC PGA quality requirements, receives and processes job requests, adds and edits streets assets in engineering and asset management software, and makes improvement recommendations for drafting processes and procedures.
The position reports to the Senior Streets Engineer (Civil Engineer II) and also receives direct technical direction and supervision from the Project Engineer of Record in accordance with EGBC PGA quality requirements for more complex projects as required. The position works with internal and external contacts, including staff within Streets Design Branch, Engineering Services, Risk Management, Legal Services and residents.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
- Collaborates with Engineers and Engineering Assistants to produce construction drawings pertaining to Street infrastructure including City streets, walking and cycling facilities, and other multidisciplinary construction projects using engineering software
- Processes topographic survey, which includes legal information, utilities, plans, profiles, and digital terrain models (DTMs)
- Drafts building grade plans, and reviews building grade plans completed by external consultants and other internal staff
- Contributes to the development and updates to the Streets Design Branch drafting
- Other duties/responsibilities as assigned
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
- Completion of a diploma or equivalent in technical school supplemented by courses in survey technology, or civil and structural technology, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Sound knowledge of engineering design principles and methods, including street and transportation design typical standards, guidelines, and best practices
- General understanding of survey processes, construction methods and materials used in civil and municipal engineering
- Strong written and oral communication, and organizational skills
- Good interpersonal skills including proven ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public, contractors, city staff, and supervisors
- Ability to process survey data in written or electronic form and produce plans, profiles, digital terrain models (DTMs) and construction drawings
- Ability to read and interpret engineering plans and understand specifications.
- Ability to exercise sound judgement and to solve problems independently
- Ability to work in a team environment with little or no supervision and with multi-tasking to meet tight timelines
- Proficiency with software applications and databases for use in word processing, spreadsheets, work management and 3-dimensional street survey, design, and construction
Where operationally appropriate and subject to change, the City of Vancouver has a Flexible Work Program. This program allows staff to work a hybrid work week from locations that are a daily commutable distance from their work at a City worksite. At this time this position is eligible to be part of the Flexible Work Program.
