Main Purpose & Function
The Engineering Assistant III (Draftsperson) provides drafting support for Traffic, Electrical Operations and Design (TEOD) branch. The position processes topographic survey using engineering software and develops design and construction drawings. The position works in accordance with departmental Organizational Quality Management (OQM) procedures, receives and processes job requests, assists asset management with electrical assets in engineering and asset management software, and makes improvement recommendations for drafting standards, processes and procedures.
Key Contacts and Reporting Relationships
The position reports to the Senior Engineer (Civil Engineer II) and receives direct technical direction and supervision from the project Engineer of Records in accordance with OQM procedures for more complex projects as required. The position works with internal and external contacts, including staff within TEOD branch, Engineering Services, and consultants.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
- Collaborates with Electrical Technicians I/II, Engineers and Engineering Assistants to produce construction drawings pertaining to TEOD infrastructure including City street lighting and power distribution construction projects using engineering software.
- Completes civil/electrical design drawings in AutoCAD, including plan, detail, profile and cross-sections drawings.
- Conducts site investigations to document existing electrical equipment and record any observations that are relevant to the design process.
- Reviews electrical drawings completed by external consultants for City drafting standard compliance.
- Integrates external contractor design record drawings with internal GIS and existing electrical information.
- Assists in training of new and/or junior staff as required.
- Formulates recommendations for the development and updates to the Electrical Design drafting standards.
- Other duties/responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
- Completion of Grade 12 supplemented with technical courses related to the work and some experience in drafting, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Working knowledge of engineering design principles and methods, including electrical design typical standards, guidelines, and best practices.
- Skills in written and oral communication, and organization.
- Good interpersonal skills including ability to establish and maintain effective working.
- Ability to create Civil/Electrical drawings including plan views, profiles, details and schematics.
- Exceptional attention to detail and a high level of accuracy.
- Ability to work in a team environment with little or no supervision and with multi-tasking to meet tight time lines.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering plans and understand specifications.
- Ability to provide graphical representations and reports related to work.
- Ability to exercise sound judgement and to solve problems independently.
- Ability to perform a variety of clerical tasks related to municipal engineering work.
- Proficiency in the use of office and professional software applications and databases such as MS Office, AutoCAD, Excel, and Word.
Where operationally appropriate and subject to change, the City of Vancouver has a Flexible Work Program. This program allows staff to work remotely 1 – 4 days a week from locations that are a daily commutable distance from their work at a City worksite. At this time this position is eligible to be part of the Flexible Work Program.
The City’s COVID-19 vaccination policy is currently suspended and as a result, vaccination against COVID-19 is not required at this time. However, should circumstances change and the City deem it necessary to re-introduce such policy, you may be required to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 in order to be eligible to continue performing your duties.
