Main Purpose and Function
The Equipment Operator III is responsible for the operation and maintenance of equipment involved with stump grinding. Stump grinding operations is an important and necessary role that supports the continuation of the Urban Forest. Replacement of trees can only be facilitated by preparing sites through stump grinding. Position will report directly to the Superintendent of Urban Forestry and may involve the supervision of two or more subordinates.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
- Operates and services a large stump grinder. Two units are towable, and the other one is a mounted tow behind.
- Stump grinding will occur in parks and on streets, citywide.
- Operator is required to interpret and understand the Call-One packages of information. All work with machinery impacting underground requires a Call-One and an information package identifying underground utilities.
- Operator will be responsible for completion of VanTree work orders.
- Position is a physical job, and one that requires shoveling debris from truck, or trailer and/or shovel soil and debris from ground into a truck or trailer.
- Operator will be required to remove wood debris from sites as part of completion of the stump removal.
- Operator will be required to operate a chainsaw or reciprocating saw to sever large roots or cut stumps below grade
- Operator will be responsible for all related paperwork and record keeping
- Operator will work and direct a hydrovac unit as required
- Performs related work as required
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
- Completion of grade 8 supplemented by experience in the operation of equipment such as heavy road rollers and related equipment is desirable
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Considerable knowledge of the methods and practices employed in the operation of heavy roller equipment.
- Working knowledge of the rules of safe operation and the precautions necessary to avoid accidents when operating such equipment.
- Some knowledge of the methods, practices and tools used in servicing and making adjustments to such equipment.
- Ability to understand and effectively carry out oral instructions.
- Skill in the operation of medium sized construction equipment.
- Interpretation and understanding of the Call-One packages of information is preferred.
Driver’s License and Record Checks:
Applicable Driver's License and endorsements as required by the British Columbia Motor Vehicle Act.
Candidates must attach the following records and satisfy the City’s driving requirements to be considered for this role:
- Copy of your five-year ICBC Commercial Driver’s Abstract (N Print) directly from ICBC dated within 30 days of this posting
- Copy of your five-year ICBC Driver’s Claims History directly from ICBC within 30 days of this posting
**Drivers who have moved to B.C. during the past five years will be required to provide their Driver’s Abstract and Driver’s Claims History from their previous place of residence.
