Main Purpose & Function

Working under the direction of the Construction Working Foreman and/or the Construction Sub-Foreman, the Equipment Operator V is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the equipment and is required to perform minor equipment maintenance and repairs. The primary duties for this position include, but are not limited to, excavating and loading material and equipment, placing and removing various types of wooden and modular shoring, placing pipes, backfilling and compacting.

 

The Equipment Operator V is also expected to exercise considerable independence of action and judgement in performing their duties received from a supervisor who will check the work periodically and upon completion for workmanship, safety and the attainment of the desired work objective for the project. The Equipment Operator V must also display proficiency in all aspects of excavator operation and must be consistently smooth, efficient and safe in carrying out all of the assigned tasks.  

 

Auxiliary shifts will be scheduled up to a day prior to the work schedule and will be on days between Monday to Friday, 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM.  The successful candidate may be required to adjust shifts as operationally required and may be signed out before 3:30PM as required.  


Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  • To safely operate the heavy equipment used for excavating, loading, unloading, backfilling, pipe laying and other worksite related duties.
  • To work under the supervision and direction of the Sewers Operation Working Foreman and/or Sub-Foreman.
  • To perform daily safety inspections of the equipment.
  • To perform daily reviews of the utility plans and work drawings in order to coordinate with all co-workers relevant to the work being performed.
  • To wash, clean and perform minor running maintenance and repairs to the equipment as and when required.
  • To properly load trucks in conjunction with direction from the truck drivers and other job site specific considerations identified at the start of the project.
  • To keep accurate time sheets, update the equipment log book and complete other related paperwork as requested and required by the supervisor.
  • As a representative of the City, to deal with the public in an effective, courteous and respectful manner when required.

 

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Grade 10 or equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • Minimum of 6 months (1040 hours) experience as an Equipment Operator V accumulated over the past 3 years.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to work from engineering drawings and sketches and to fully understand the design and utility information contained.
  • Successful completion of the Excavator Operator Training Course or equivalent

 

Drivers License and Record Checks

  • A current and valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License and a Satisfactory National Safety Code driving record
    • 5 years accumulation of no more than 9 points, not in excess of 3 points per single year
    • 3 years accumulation of no more than 1 preventable work related driving or equipment operating accident in any single year
    • Employees who do not demonstrate a satisfactory driving record will have their application reviewed in more detail
  • Candidates must attach the following records and satisfy the City’s driving requirements to be considered for this role:
    • Copy of your five-year ICBC Commercial Driver’s Abstract (N Print) directly from ICBC dated within 14 days of this posting
    • Copy of your five-year ICBC Driver’s Claims History directly from ICBC within 14 days of this posting
    • If you have less than five years driving experience in BC, a request must be made for out of province/country abstract and claims history
