Main Purpose & Function

The Streets, Traffic and Electrical Operations Branch have a temporary 6 month opportunity for a Graphics Technician (Vehicle Route Mapping Analyst).  This position will support the Streets, Traffic and Electrical Operations Branch which includes the development and revision of various route maps as well as creation of on-street asset maps for ongoing maintenance purposes.  Validating the types of mapping and asset cataloging services required on an ongoing basis for the Branch in consideration of new and ongoing operational needs as they arise is a major function of this role. 


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

The Graphics Technician will be responsible for the following:

  • Illustrate current service patterns and gaps on city maps
  • Create, update and optimize various route maps
  • ‎Create, update and optimize various asset maps
  • Identify possible related synergies between location of on-street assets and maintenance requirements
  • Support Streets, Traffic and Electrical Operations Branch with general mapping needs, as required
  • Other duties/responsibilities as assigned.



Education and Experience:

  • Completion of Grade 12, supplemented by a diploma in computer based graphics, graphic design, commercial arts or photography plus sound experience in the graphics design function, or an equivalent combination of training and experience
  • Experience with mapping/CAD/GPS System Expertise
  • Experience with reporting & Data Visualization (e.g. Excel pivot tables, graphs, maps, status reporting)
  • Experience with database management and administration (e.g.: SQL Server, Oracle and Access)
  • Experience with inventory and asset cataloging
  • Experience with data entry
  • Hansen & Lagan Awareness
  • Municipal‎ Operations Experience‎ (able to work in fast paced and rapidly changing work area) and previous fleet route planning and on-street asset cataloging is an asset


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Considerable knowledge of graphic design, computer based graphics, and audio/visual presentation and other relevant presentation methods and techniques.
  • Sound knowledge of departmental functions, objectives and procedures.
  • Sound knowledge of printing, photo-reproduction and other processes and their application to the work being represented.
  • Ability to perform database creation and entry
  • Ability to perform graphic duties including illustration, layout, typesetting, and design of a variety of requested projects using both manual and computer graphic techniques.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with, and establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff.
  • Ability to organize own work and meet deadlines and to schedule and coordinate production of material.
  • Skill in the use of graphic and other required equipment.

Salary Information: Pay Grade GR-021: $32.25 to $37.97 per hour
