Main Purpose and Function
The Lead Park Ranger shares a commitment to community and enhancing the park experience for 200+ parks in Vancouver. Parks include green spaces, picnic areas, sports fields and courts, play areas, bike and hiking pathways, facilities, beaches, and nature preserves. The Majority of the work is leading a team of Park Rangers assisting with day to day operations which includes preparing and delivering daily briefings and debriefings, supporting field work as well as assisting with administrative duties as required. The Lead Park Ranger is responsible for supervising the work of Park Rangers, operationalizing plans, and initiatives, assist with developing and delivering training/education sessions, meeting withh stakeholders and aprtners such as bust not limited to City Portective Services, Police, Fire Department, and Community Outreach Representatives on park security and community related matters, conducting incident investigations and particpate in planning acttivies. The Lead Park Ranger leads and participates in the work of a large group of RFT, RFT, and Auxiliary employees; provides advise, information, and direction to park users regarding park regulations, facilities, hazards, natural features, and park conditions; ensures comliance with Park Board by-laws and acts as an escalation point for Park Rangers.
Specific Duties/Responsibilities
- Leads team of Park Rangers in day-to-day operations and provide clear instruction, guidance, mentoring and coaching when required.
- Assists Park Ranger Superintendents in developing day-to-day schedules and daily workplans, operational plans and training materials.
- Monitors call in line and makes daily schedule revisions and shift adjustments as required and according to policy to meet operational needs.
- Works closely with the vulnerable population, connecting them with appropriate services when required.
- Escalate matters when required to proper superior(s).
- Works in field performing Park Ranger duties as required.
- Monitors parks, facilities and sports fields and courts for appropriate use enforcing the Park Control Bylaw when required.
- Provides advice, information, and direction to park users regarding park regulations, facilities, hazards, natural features, and park conditions.
- Administers First Aid and attends to any complaint issues that may arise in parks or via 311.
- Ensures Park users can use the park facilities harmoniously while preserving the integrity of the park system
- Monitors, unlocks, and locks Park facilities and gates as required to ensure optimal availability to park users.
- Reviews and verifies timesheets for Park Rangers, ensuring all data submitted is accurate and adheres to applicable Collective Agreement provisions.
- Assists with fleet management and vehicle inspections.
- Other duties/responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Qualification Requirements
Education and Experience:
- Completion of Grade 12 supplemented by courses related to the work and sound related experience OR an equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Experiencing leading and managing a team is a unionized environment preferred
- Standard First Aid with CPR C and AED.
- Valid BC Drivers License
- Police Record Check
- Security Workers License is an asset.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Thorough knowledge of operations, rules, bylaws and regulations governing the work performed.
- Considerable knowledge of assigned park areas and facilities and hazards found therein.
- Knowledge how to work collaboratively and effectively with vulnerable population.
- Working knowledge of the procedures for bylaw enforcement.
- Some knowledge of natural history and ecology of assigned area.
- Some knowledge of fire watch and traffic control practices and procedures.
- Ability to use de-escalation tactics, situational awareness, and effective verbal communication.
- Ability to provide advice, assistance, information, and direction to a variety of park users in a concise, courteous, and tactful manner in sometimes difficult and sensitive circumstances.
- Ability to enforce rules, guidelines, and regulations.
- Ability to perform Standard First Aid
- Ability to walk and/or ride a bicycle long distances and work in varying weather conditions.
- Ability and situational awareness to detect unusual situations and skill handling the same.
- Ability to arrange and successfully carry out work schedules optimizing operations.
- Ability to identify performance concerns and raising more complex issues to the attention of the Park Ranger Superintendent(s).
- Ability to keep routine records and act as a witness and conduct cases before a Justice of the Peace.
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Ability to perform routine repair and maintenance tasks as related to Park Operations.
A Police Record Check is a requirement of this position. A clearance requires the absence of any criminal charges or convictions related to this position.

- Copy of your five-year ICBC Commercial Driver’s Abstract (N Print) directly from ICBC dated within 14 days of this posting
- Copy of your five-year ICBC Driver’s Claims History directly from ICBC within 14 days of this posting
- If you have less than five years driving experience in BC, a request must be made for out of province/country abstract and claims history
