Job Summary: Library Public Service Assistants (“LPSAs”) work at all VPL locations across the city.  They staff VPL’s service desks, checking in and out items and answering basic questions to help patrons in a friendly and welcoming way. The library welcomes people from all walks of life. We deliver friendly, respectful and responsive service for everyone, regardless of their income, housing situation, or background. A genuine desire to help people will be a great asset in this role!

 

Duties will involve sorting and shelving books and other resources which requires the ability to lift and handle a high volume of physical items during a shift, and to stand, reach, bend, and move around the library comfortably for long periods of time. You will be part of a system that circulates over 5 million items per year!

 

LPSAs also support our creative programs for adults, kids and teens. You might help set up for an author event, or supervise a Lego block party, or even host a film screening about the issues that our community cares about. With over 5,000 programs per year at VPL, you’ll never be bored!

 

 

Job Requirements:

 

Education/Qualifications:

  • Completion of the twelfth school grade, including or supplemented by basic computer and word-processing courses.

 

Experience:

  • Sound related experience in a public library plus office administration experience.

 

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • General knowledge of VPL’s Public Space Policy and other relevant guidelines related to public and private activities on VPL property.
  • Ability to receive feedback and incorporate remedial instruction.
  • Proficiency with computer software related to the work and ability to learn new programs and online tools as required.
  • Strong commitment to delivering excellent customer service and being responsive to client requests with an open and pragmatic attitude.
  • Ability to move and set up furniture and trouble shoot A/V equipment.
  • Working knowledge of business English, spelling, grammar and arithmetic.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external service providers.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain a variety of records, files and documents related to the work.
  • Ability to work outside of regular office hours for large and special events.
  • Superior clerical aptitude with a high level of accuracy.

22.5 hours

 

 

Monday:          2:10pm-6:10pm
Tuesday:         4:10pm-8:10pm
Saturday:        8:40am-5:10pm
Sunday:          9:10am-5:10pm

Occasional evening and weekend work required.
