Main Purpose & Function 
The Mechanical Engineer provides project management, fleet management and design expertise in the acquisition, modification, and outfitting of all City vehicles and equipment purchases, as well as major changes to existing vehicles and equipment. Duties also include maintenance program development, failure analysis, and repair design.

 

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provide mechanical design and failure analysis expertise, along with safe design modifications to the existing fleet
  • Provide detailed designs for outfitting of new vehicles and equipment using 3D CAD software
  • Act as Engineer of Record for fleet repair, outfitting, and modification designs
  • Act as Engineer of Record for small City infrastructure projects like guardrails, sidewalk hatches, signs, benches, decks, etc.
  • Act as Engineer of Record for upgrades and maintenance of various plant and field equipment (asphalt plant, concrete plant, cemetery, etc.)
  • Manage the modification request process which includes examining the internal customer requests for compliance to Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standards among other regulations, coordinating the work between the various shops, and following up with vendors and other stakeholders
  • Oversee preventative maintenance programs for new equipment entering service
  • Coordinate with supply chain management during vendor selection recommendation 
  • Make fleet decisions that align with City goals and initiatives (i.e. Greenest City Action Plan)
  • Develop personal leadership skills to complement the Fleet Asset Management Team 
  • Other duties/responsibilities as assigned

 

 

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • A university degree in Mechanical Engineering or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • A minimum of 4 years of relevant experience
  • Eligibility for registration as a Professional Engineer (P. Eng.), or Engineering Licensee (P.L.Eng.) with EGBC.

 

 Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of and experience with EGBC Practice Guidelines and the new Professional Governance Act (PGA)
  • Excellent report writing skills, along with verbal & written communication & the ability to communicate with internal/external stakeholders effectively
  • A genuine interest in working with vehicles and equipment
  • Well-developed computer skills
  • Mechanical design related to mobile equipment specifically truck body design, trailer design, and/or other small infrastructure design
  • Steel and aluminum sheet-metal and structural member design, weld design, machine design, and wood design experience
  • 3D CAD modelling experience required (Autodesk Inventor experience is considered an asset)
  • PDM Software (Autodesk Vault), 2D CAD experience (Autodesk AutoCAD), Plasma/Oxy table nesting and programming software (ESAB Columbus) is an asset

 

Driver’s License and Record Checks:

  • A current and valid class 5 BC Driver’s License with and a satisfactory Commercial driving record
  • Candidates must attach the following to be considered:
    • Commercial Driving Records Abstract (N Print) for the past 5 years (no more than 14 days prior to this posting)
