Job Summary: Reporting to the Manager Networks and Data Centre, the Network and Server Specialist is a technical infrastructure expert who performs complex technical and analytic work with a focus on Cybersecurity relating to the VPL servers, data network and associated infrastructure. The position provisions, configures, installs, supports, monitors, maintains and decommissions Linux and Microsoft OS servers to support complex systems across infrastructure and ensuring that systems supporting the full range of applications used by Library staff and public meet capacity, performance, security, high availability, business continuity and disaster recovery needs.  The position requires broad knowledge of the infrastructure including physical and virtual servers, along with storage arrays, switches, consoles, UPS’, power management in server racks.  A high level of organization and judgement is required to organize, prioritize and plan work in order to deliver new assignment efficiently and while participating in maintenance, troubleshooting and remediating problems and issues in a complex infrastructure where outages or errors can have a significant operational impact on staff and the public.

 

Work is performed under supervision, with considerable independent judgement and action exercised in the analytical and technical aspects of the work. The more complex work or issues are carried out under the guidance of the Manager or Senior Network Specialist. This position has specific Cybersecurity duties and responsibilities, including planning, implementing, administering, maintaining, monitoring, and documenting IT security controls for all digital assets and processes. This position may provide guidance and instruction to more junior members of the Network and Server Team.

 

This position has access to highly sensitive and business critical data from all Library departments, and carries out network and server support for the PCI Zone.

 

This position has specific Cybersecurity duties, including:

  • Implements Cybersecurity technologies to secure and protect services delivered to Library patrons and staff, supporting cost savings, financial responsibility and legal compliance.
  • Monitors firewall logs, intrusion detection logs and other data collected by Library systems, which entails a detailed review of all pertinent traffic and transactions on any given system or network within the Library.
  • Plan, implement, administer, maintain and monitor IT security controls for all digital assets and processes (network, hypervisor, endpoint, server, application, etc), including but not limited to:
      • Vulnerability assessment, validation and remediation
      • Firewalls, routing and switching equipment
      • Intrusion Detection/Prevention Systems
      • Anti-malware protection and management
      • Remote Access Systems and VPN
      • Identity and Access Management Systems and Directories
      • Security incident management and response
      • Data Loss Prevention
      • Endpoint security (laptops, workstations, mobile devices)
      • Network Security (Wired & Wireless)
      • Application Security
      • Operating system hardening
      • Managed file transfer
      • Logging and monitoring systems (SIEM)
      • Network segmentation
      • System forensics
      • Multi-factor authentication
      • Mobile device management
      • User and system administration
  • Provides tactical technical advice and consultation to Library project teams and provides assistance with the adoption of Cybersecurity technology
  • Remains current with developments in Cybersecurity and recommends new approaches and application of new technology which will assist the Library to meet its business objectives
  • Delivers educational security awareness framework for Library staff, both business and technical, including multi-channel approaches. 
  • Takes a lead role in the technical response to cybersecurity incidents, including direction of other team members involved in the response

 

Job Requirements:

Education/Qualifications/Experience:

  • A post-secondary degree, preferably at the Bachelor’s level, in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field, or equivalent training and experience related to the work.
  • Considerable related data centre technician experience in a mid-sized environment, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • IT security certification is an asset.
  • Networking certification in the technologies being supported is an asset.
  • Microsoft certification is an asset.
  • Data centre management certification is an asset.
  • VM Ware certification is an asset.

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Considerable knowledge of current cybersecurity standards & technologies.
  • Considerable knowledge of industry standard best practices in installing, configuring, supporting and securing IT systems
  • Considerable knowledge of systems infrastructure components including: compute, data storage, data protection, networking.
  • Considerable knowledge of virtualization tools and techniques (VMWare, Hypervisor)
  • Considerable knowledge of Linux operating systems
  • Considerable knowledge of Microsoft operating systems
  • Considerable knowledge or MS Active Directory, Exchange, Teams. MS-SQL
  • Considerable knowledge of mail services
  • Considerable knowledge server and storage monitoring and reporting tools.
  • Considerable knowledge of backup solutions including managing backups for disaster recovery, business continuity and compliance purposes
  • Considerable knowledge of system integration between business applications and across technical platforms
  • Good to excellent understanding and experience with compute, storage (e.g. SAN, Netapp), network (e.g. Network Protocol, Firewall, Load Balancers, and system interconnectivity), Security, High Availability, and Disaster Recovery concepts.
  • Certification in specific technologies a plus.
  • Sound knowledge of network and communications hardware such as network routers, switches, firewalls, load balancers and wireless/Wi-Fi technologies.
  • Thorough knowledge of system integration between business applications across technical platforms.
  • Thorough knowledge of the characteristics, capabilities, and integration of networking protocols, computer hardware and operating systems.
  • Proven ability to analyze and resolve hardware and software problems in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Ability to investigate and resolve complex hardware and software problems, consulting with other technical staff and external consultant as required.
  • Ability to perform feasibility studies on business process and technologies.
  • Ability to make recommendations on business process and technology roadmaps.
  • Ability to work on multiple initiatives simultaneously in a fast-paced environment with constantly changing priorities.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external contacts and team members to provide advice, information, and assistance.
  • Ability to evaluate and make recommendations on proposed hardware and software acquisitions
  • Ability to work with both technical and non-technical staff.
  • Ability to understand features and limitations of data centre enterprise infrastructure systems on premise, off-premise, and in the cloud.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Thorough working knowledge of office productivity tools
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare reports in clear and non-technical language.
  • Demonstrated ability to use hardware support tools for maintaining and installing equipment
  • Demonstrated ability to lift 25kg for equipment moves and installations.

Employment Type: Temporary Full-Time - 2-year term with the possibility of extension or curtailment
Salary: $49.65 to $58.66 per hour 
Work Schedule: 

Monday - Friday: 8:30am - 5:00pm
