Main Purpose and Function
Sanitation Operations, Street Cleaning helps keep our City clean and involves collection of litter, debris and abandoned waste from Parks/City streets and laneways. Operations Workers may also be assigned to other Sanitation Branch specific work.
Street Cleaning is currently hiring for Day Shift followed by our annual Leaf Collection Program. Regular hours of work below are based on an 8-hour work day and may be changed in accordance with operational requirements and the Collective Agreement:
- August through November: 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday through Friday (Day Shift)
- November through January: 6:30 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday through Friday (Leaf Collection Program)
The Sanitation Operations Branch functions 365 days/year and applicants who are interested in continuing employment in the branch after the Leaf Collection Program must be willing and able to work shifts that may include days, afternoons and overnights with the expectation to work weekends. Successful candidates may be required to adjust shifts as operationally required and in accordance with the Collective Agreement.
Successful applicants' availability must meet Branch expectations in order to continue employment with the Branch. Functional and/or physical assessments related to the bona fide position requirements may be required.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
- Perform manual cleaning with a rake, shovel, broom and leaf blower on assigned maps/beats.
- Tip/empty litter receptacles on streets and in parks on assigned maps/beats.
- Clear lanes of abandoned debris on assigned maps/beats.
- Special events preparation and clean up across the city as assigned.
- Drivers will dump waste material at the Vancouver Transfer Station or designated compactors or dump zones as needed/directed.
- Respond to weather specific events that cause risk to public safety or assets in the event of such things as flooding, snow, ice and storms.
- Document completed work such as pre/post trip vehicle inspections in compliance with Branch policies.
- Accurately record the results of investigations or work completed in the field in response to a Service Requests from 311.
- Maintain cleanliness of equipment and vehicles.
- Proper use and storage of equipment and tools.
- Qualified and trained employees are eligible to operate rear-load Garbage Trucks, Sweepers and Flusher equipment at the higher rate specific to the work for the job classification.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
- Up to completion of high school.
- Labouring and semi-skilled experience with small hand tools.
- Driving experience and knowledge of the City of Vancouver roadways.
- Experience operating small pick-up trucks, mid to large size trucks, sweepers, flushers, garbage trucks and/or experience operating a Class 3 vehicle or higher preferred.
Driver’s License and Record Checks:
- A current and valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License and a Satisfactory National Safety Code driving record is required.
- A current and valid Class 3 BC Driver’s License with Air Brakes or higher and a Satisfactory National Safety Code driving record is an asset.
- Employees who do not demonstrate a satisfactory driving record will have their application reviewed in more detail.

- Copy of your five-year ICBC Commercial Driver’s Abstract (N Print) directly from ICBC dated within 14 days of this posting
- Copy of your five-year ICBC Driver’s Claims History directly from ICBC within 14 days of this posting
- If you have less than five years driving experience in BC, a request must be made for out of province/country abstract and claims history
