Main Purpose and Function
The City of Vancouver has been recognized throughout North America for innovation in sustainable rainwater management infrastructure, otherwise known as green infrastructure. The City adopted the Rain City Strategy in 2019, an ambitious and award-winning long-term plan to capture and treat 90% of Vancouver’s average annual rainfall through the implementation of green infrastructure on public and private property throughout the City. The Green Infrastructure Designer will be part of a high-functioning team that prepares green infrastructure designs for construction in right-of-ways and other public spaces. the The successful candidates will have a focus on drafting and drawing production, but they will also undertake a variety of other duties including some field work, research, technical, and administrative duties in the Green Infrastructure Implementation Branch.
Reporting to the Green Infrastructure Engineer, the Green Infrastructure Planning Assistant (PA III) will work in close collaboration with engineers, landscape architects, planners, and horticulturists to implement and maintain world-class green infrastructure.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
In order to fulfill this role, the Green Infrastructure Planning Assistant will:
- Prepares and conducts technical research, surveys, analysis on topics of moderate complexity, including undertaking relevant field observations and notes and verifying accuracy of the content and field investigations;
- Performs general administrative duties including data entry, taking meeting minutes, taking and organizing photos.
- Provides mapping and graphics support;
- Manages data, including collection, tracking, and reporting;
- Assists in the preparation of technical reports, council reports;
- Organize meetings and events, support public engagement and stakeholder processes, participate in and documents public events and staff meetings;
- Creates maps, graphics, and presentations for internal and external communication, including work with GIS software such as MapInfo or ArcGIS and graphic programs such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and PowerPoint.
- Prepare communication and presentation materials;
- Maintain initiative web pages and contact lists;
- Respond to public inquiries; and
- Perform other duties and responsibilities, as assigned.
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
- Post-secondary education in planning, urban studies, sustainability, engineering technology, environmental sciences or related field and experience, preferably in a municipal setting, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of integrated rainwater management and green infrastructure policy, planning, design, and/or operations would be an asset
- Experience conducting research, collecting and analyzing data, performing field studies and providing technical, communications and/or logistical support for design, planning , research and/or policy development projects
- Excellent interpersonal and written and verbal communication skills
- Experience working collaboratively and effectively on inter-disciplinary teams, with staff across City departments, with contractors, consultants, outside agencies, industry stakeholders and the public
- Strong organizational and time management skills including the ability to (1) manage multiple projects and tasks at the same time (2) set and meet deadlines, and (3) adapt to emerging or changing priorities
- Experience developing communication materials for workshops, meetings or presentations and supporting stakeholder engagement strategies
- Experience with mapping and/or design. Strong knowledge or skills in using computer software such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, AutoCAD and software for graphic design and mapping such as MapInfo and the Adobe suite of software for map and graphical representations
- Ability to work independently and to provide support and advice while functioning effectively in a team environment.
- Ability to meet transportation needs.
Where operationally appropriate and subject to change, the City of Vancouver has a Flexible Work Program. This program allows staff to work remotely 1 – 4 days a week from locations that are a daily commutable distance from their work at a City worksite. At this time this position is eligible to be part of the Flexible Work Program.
The City’s COVID-19 vaccination policy is currently suspended and as a result, vaccination against COVID-19 is not required at this time. However, should circumstances change and the City deem it necessary to re-introduce such policy, you may be required to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 in order to be eligible to continue performing your duties.
