Main Purpose and Function

The Vancouver Parks Board is looking for energetic, enthusiastic and responsible individuals to be responsible for the planning, leadership, promotion, evaluation and volunteer supervision of the Summer Playground Program in several local neighbourhood parks across the City - specifically in July and August. Please note Urban Park Activations is expected to end in October.

 

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

The Playground Leader position is responsible to plan and lead children in social, recreational arts, sports, games and special events activities while ensuring that all activities meet the S.A.F.E. and MARS safety standards. Additionally, this position will provide direction and supervise volunteers and perform marketing, promotion and outreach activities of all Playground activities, including preparing detailed monthly calendars, managing a supplies budget and identifying supplies and equipment required for the programs. The Playground Leader will also answer any questions and concerns from parents and/or members of the public and respond to first aid needs and/or incidents as required and perform basic administrative tasks and reports as required.

 

This position is also responsible for the operation, supervision, and maintenance of the park wading pool and/or Spray Park at several local neighbourhood parks across the City. Playground Leaders may have the opportunity to work with the Urban Park Activation team, leading programs within priority parks in the Downtown Eastside. Working knowledge of the principles and objectives of harm reduction, trauma informed practice, and decolonization will be considered an asset.

 

Qualifications

Education & Experience:

  • Completion of Grade 12 and some related experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience
  • A Current and valid First Aid and CPR-C Certification is required (Only emergency or standard first aid will be accepted and CPR-C is mandatory)
  • A Current and valid Food Safe is an asset Class 4 driver’s license is an asset

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong knowledge of age-appropriate activities (games and crafts) for children ages 2-12 years demonstrated by considerable experience working with children of varying ages
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of child behaviour, needs and interests Strong communication, interpersonal skills, leadership & problem solving skills
  • Ability to assist in the planning and carrying out of special events demonstrated by experience with special events
  • Ability to lead groups and provide basic instructions in various activities using strong leadership skills
  • Ability to respond to emergency situations appropriately and perform first aid as required
  • Ability to recognize the hazards involved in working alone and/or off-site and take necessary precautionary measures
  • Knowledge, understanding and experience with wading pool chemistry and proper pool testing procedures is an asset
  • Previous playground experience is an asset Strong communication, interpersonal skills, leadership & problem solving skills
  • Some knowledge of the principles and objectives of harm reduction, trauma informed practice and decolonization
