Main Purpose and Function
The Project Coordinator III reviews complex building plans and documentation for compliance with the Vancouver Building By-law and related standards and City policies and facilitates applications between various City departmental review groups, homeowners, developers and design professionals from the initial application stage to building permit issuance.  This specialized position focuses on compliance with NFPA 13, 13R, 13D, 14, 25 and 96 for sprinkler, fire and mechanical systems.


Specific Duties and Responsibilities
Working in a fast-paced, service-oriented branch, this position completes technical checks on complex building and sprinkler permit applications, including mechanical plan reviews; enters into discussions with consultants, developers and contractors; assists those applicants and/or property owners new to the building and trades permit process; participates in pre-application meetings; answers telephone and counter enquiries,; and provides timely and accurate advice on technical and procedural matters.



Education and Experience:

  • Graduation from a recognized Institute of Technology with a two-year diploma in Building, Mechanical or Civil Technology
  • Considerable related industry or municipal experience in plans examination and inspection, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Solid experience in the design and construction of buildings and/or mechanical systems, preferably in a multi-disciplinary environment.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Thorough working knowledge of the Vancouver Building By-law, and other related codes and standards, including National Fire Protection Association, with the ability to provide interpretation on the intent of the By-law.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and handle a heavy workload in an organized and efficient manner.
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills and the ability to deal tactfully and effectively with the public.
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative, work autonomously, and make decisions independently
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in order to convey information and explain technical and procedural matters.
  • Computer skills are required, specifically Microsoft Office and POSSE, along with the desire and ability to enhance those skills in the future.


A current and valid BC Driver’s License is a requirement of this position. The license must not include any restrictions that would affect the ability to legally and safely carry out job responsibilities. Transportation arrangements must meet operational requirements of the Department.
