Main Purpose & Function

Fleet Engineering & Asset Management (FEAM) is hiring a Fleet / Project Engineer. This position provides project management, fleet management, engineering, and design expertise for the acquisition, modification, and outfitting of all City vehicle and equipment purchases, as well as major changes to existing equipment and rolling stock. Key relationships are with the City’s operations groups, including fleet maintenance garages, shops, and supply chain management. This role works with the various City departments to identify equipment requirements based on operational and process needs.

 

This position is primarily based out of the main facility located at Manitoba Yard in Vancouver. Travel between various sites within the Greater Vancouver Area is part of this role.

 

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  • Plan and manage the City’s vehicle and equipment replacement program, including defining technical specifications, analyzing lifecycle costs, and managing the ordering process.
  • Provide mechanical design, outfitting, and failure analysis expertise to City departments.
  • Develop and approve safe design modifications to the existing fleet.
  • Analyze fleet utilization and emission profiles to design and implement emission reduction strategies.
  • Assess fleet utilization throughout the City and provide appropriate guidance and recommendations to Council, departments, and branches regarding vehicle and equipment usage.
  • Prepare capital and operating budget plans, financial business cases, and regular performance reports or presentations for Council and City departments.
  • Lead fleet projects from start to finish by establishing and tracking timelines, budgets and risks, and providing regular updates.

 

 

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in science or engineering.
  • Registration, or eligibility for registration, as a Professional Engineer in British Columbia.
  • An Engineer-In-Training (EIT) with related experience will be considered.
  • Experience with capital project management, particularly using the PMP framework.
  • Demonstrated creativity, foresight, and mature engineering judgement in anticipating and solving engineering problems.
  • Experience developing equipment strategies and conducting failure analysis.
  • Ability to work effectively with all levels of management.
  • A current, valid Class 5 BC driver’s license with a clean driving abstract is required. 

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Background in engineering design, technical roles, or hands-on work in the truck, fleet, or heavy equipment industries is an asset.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritize, and meet competing deadlines.
  • Strong analytical skills, with the ability to interpret data and translate findings into practical recommendations.
  • Well-developed critical thinking, with the ability to apply logic and challenge assumptions.
  • Excellent report writing, communication, and interpersonal skills, with strong leadership, facilitation, and conflict resolution abilities.
  • Proficient with the Microsoft Office.

Salary Information: Pay Grade RNG-080: $102,960 to $128,691 per annum
