Main Purpose and Function

The Security Supervisor supports the Centre’s mandate of providing a safe, welcoming, professional and accessible environment for patrons and staff. The position does this through leadership in relationship building, patron engagement, and using a conflict-positive approach to resolving issues and concerns in the Centre within the framework of established guidelines. The Security Supervisor is a working supervisory position, with responsibilities in supervising Security staff on shift; administrative work overseeing security operations; floor and public inquiry support; and supporting the safety and maintenance at the Evelyne Saller Centre.

 

Specific Duties/Responsibilities

  • Performs day-to-day site/shift security operations aimed at achieving the Evelyne Saller Centre’s mandate of a safe, welcoming, professional and accessible environment for patrons and staff, including training new staff, updating staff on new procedures; direct supervision of workday positions/rotations/breaks/program support; reporting/documenting; daily huddles; creating documents of procedures and policies for distribution, tracking employee training
  • Creates Security staff schedules and conducts time entry review
  • Monitors the performance of security staff which includes providing direction to the Security Attendants, training, coaching and performance reviews
  • Assists with Occupational Health and Safety and WorkSafe matters
  • Liaises with emergency services on security and medical related matters.
  • Leads a variety of security incident related responses, including near miss and critical incident situations and with patrons who are barred from the Centre while keeping others safe.
  • Performs regular security functions including access control, patrols, program and event support, and clerical duties as required, including reporting building maintenance and repair requirements.
  • Revises security procedures with reference to investigations, helping define new procedures and policies in consultation with management and rest of security team
  • Reviews incident reports and identifies of training, procedure review, and applies the Code of Conduct to determine access restrictions for patrons
  • Orders security and First Aid related supplies as needed
  • Performs other duties as required

 

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Education and Experience:

  • Completion of Grade 12, including or supplemented by Security related courses and sound related experience including some experience in a supervisory capacity or an equivalent combination of training and experience
  • Intermediate First Aid Certification
  • Experience and knowledge in working with socially and economically disadvantaged communities is preferred.
  • Basic Security Training (BST) Certificate is preferred  

 

 Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Thorough knowledge of security policies, procedures, techniques, principles and standards as they relate to the work performed.
  • Considerable knowledge of the buildings and grounds patrolled, and control, alarm and monitoring systems.
  • Working knowledge of investigative techniques.
  • Working knowledge of the organization of the City, the general functions the Centre, and the nature of services performed.
  • Working knowledge of office practices and procedures and the use of Microsoft Office suite
  • Working knowledge of department budgeting activities; planning, monitoring, tracking.
  • Ability to coordinate security operations and develop related plans.
  • Ability to select, train and supervise the work of security patrol staff; provide training and guidance to same. 
  • Ability to follow-up on complex incident reports and to investigate incidents and recommend corrective action.
  • Ability to train civic staff in a variety of security related topics and emergency evacuation procedures.
  • Ability to establish, maintain and prepare a variety of records, files and reports related to the work.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external contacts.
  • Excellent verbal de-escalation, community engagement, effective relationship building, and conflict resolution skills are required.
  • A high level of initiative and skill working both independently and with a team while multitasking in a fast paced environment.
  • Sound knowledge of departmental practices, policies & procedures
  • Ability to meet transportation needs
