Main Purpose & Function

Reporting to a Commissioned BC Land Surveyor (Surveyor I) and/or a Land Survey Technician, the Survey Assistant II provides assistance with projects that include legal surveys to establish property boundaries and a range of other legal, occupation, construction, topographic, quantity and site surveys. The position is as a member of a survey crew that performs field work for statute land surveys, property boundary retracement and establishment, control surveys, and topographic surveys, as well as provides clerical support in the office.

 

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assists in the full range of survey tasks with both manual and automated duties such as the operation of modern legal survey tools including GNSS equipment, automatic and digital levels, robotic total stations, and data collection equipment.
  • Conducts field work including searching for and setting of legal survey posts, taking measurements and establishing lines and grades, often in a busy urban environment.
  • Performs simple field surveys, maintains field equipment, files and indexes survey records, downloads field data, researches field projects in the Land Survey Branch vault, and reduces field notes of level loops.
  • Provides clerical support such as scanning and photocopying, basic data entry, assisting Engineering Services with the delivery of information handouts, pick-up or delivery of goods and equipment, and the operation of passenger cars, trucks and vans.
  • Other duties/responsibilities as assigned.

 

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Completion of Grade 12 supplemented with survey theory course work and some related experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Experience or training with modern survey equipment including GNSS equipment, automatic and digital levels, robotic total stations, and data collection tools.
  • Diploma of Technology in Geomatics would be an asset.

 

 Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of municipal surveying procedures and safety methods.
  • Skill in the use and care of tools and equipment used in the work.
  • Good communication (verbal and writing) skills.
  • Ability to make elementary arithmetic calculations and prepare field notes and sketches.
  • Ability to create and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships.
  • Ability to exercise tact and diplomacy when dealing with the public.
  • Ability to perform detailed work accurately.
  • Aptitude for training and advancement to higher levels of work.
  • Sufficient physical strength to permit the lifting and carrying of equipment used in the work.
  • Ability to work and walk for long periods outdoors under all weather and traffic conditions.

 

Driver’s License and Record Checks:

  • A current and valid Class5 BC Driver’s License and a satisfactory driving record.
