Main Purpose and Function 
The Truck Driver II is responsible for driving a single axle heavy truck (14,543 kg GVW) with a three to four cubic yard dump box or flat deck in order to deliver construction and maintenance materials such as aggregates, asphalt, lumber, castings, pre-cast materials, pipe, pumps, as well as a variety of building materials. The Truck Driver II may also be required to operate a truck mounted hydraulic crane in loading and unloading heavy construction materials. Additionally, it is expected that the Truck Driver II assists with a variety of labouring duties as required.

 

The successful candidate will need to be fit tested for respirators as operationally required. The successful candidate must be required to complete the Load Securement Training Course.

 

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  • Safely and efficiently operate a single axle dump truck or flat deck for the purpose of transporting materials, personnel, and equipment to and from the work site.
  • Work under the supervision and direction of Site Supervisor II.
  • Tow trailers, compressors and other such applicable to the work being performed.
  • Perform daily safety inspections and maintain accurate logs and records as required such as pre and post reports.
  • Ensure that the vehicle is properly loaded / unloaded, and the load is safely secured.
  • Assist the crew in the performance of a variety of maintenance and construction duties which include using jackhammers (various sizes), Hilti drills, cut off saws, chain saws, and a wide variety of hand tools.
  • Assist with helping heavy two to three man lifts of catch basin frames and lids, manhole frames and lids including larger non city ones. IE TELUS, Hydro, Metro Vancouver.
  • Wash, clean, service and make minor running repairs to the truck as required.
  • Safely operate and be responsible for the minor running maintenance of a mobile crane used for loading and transporting of CB stones and grates frames, manhole lids with frames, pumping equipment and other materials as required by the Sewer Operations Branch for Municipal work.
  • Safely assess the size and weights of loads and use the load chart as required.
  • Operate a two-way radio for job related activities using proper, brief, and concise radio procedures.
  • Assist in the performance of a variety of maintenance tasks and may instruct one or more subordinates engaged in duties assigned by a Site Supervisor. Including, working as a laborer as a part of a small crew.
  • Perform related work as required.

 

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Minimum of 6 months' (1040 hours) experience as a Truck Driver II or higher within the last 3 years.
  • Completion of Grade 8 and considerable experience in the operation of large trucks and attached auxiliary equipment preferably in the performance of general construction and maintenance tasks.
  • Traffic Control Training is preferred
  • Must have Load Securement training or be able to obtain it prior to awarding.
  • WHMIS Training is preferred.

 

 Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Sound knowledge of the hazards, safety precautions and WorkSafe and driving regulations pertaining to the work.
  • Thorough knowledge of the rules of safe operation and the precautions to be taken to avoid accidents in operating large trucks and auxiliary or attached equipment.
  • Good knowledge of the methods and procedures used in loading and transporting heavy materials and equipment.
  • Ability to understand and effectively carry out written and oral instructions with a minimum of supervision and to supervise one or more subordinates.
  • Ability to perform labouring duties safely. Good knowledge about lifting techniques in relation to physically moving moderately heavy materials.
  • Skill in the use and care of all equipment and tools used in the work.
  • Ability to labour and have good working knowledge of safe excavation practices, confined space entries, WHMIS and traffic control.
  • Ability to courteously answer questions and deal with the public.
  • Skill in the operation of large trucks with attached or auxiliary equipment used in performing various construction and maintenance tasks.
  • Skill in securing heavy loads on trucks to ensure safe transportation.
  • Skill related to mechanical aptitude.

 

Driver’s License and Record Checks:

  • A current and valid Class 3 BC Driver’s License with Air Brakes or higher and a Satisfactory National Safety Code driving record
    • 5 years accumulation of no more than 9 points, not in excess of 3 points per single year
    • 3 years accumulation of no more than 1 preventable work-related driving or equipment operating accident in any single year
    • Employees who do not demonstrate a satisfactory driving record will have their application reviewed in more detail
