Main Purpose and Function
The Truck Driver III safely and efficiently operates a tandem axle for the purposes of transporting aggregate, materials, and equipment to and from work sites as required. The Truck Driver III must abide by all driving policies and procedures in accordance with the City of Vancouver, BC Commercial Transport Act, and BC Motor Vehicle Act.
Auxiliary shifts will be scheduled up to a day prior to the work schedule and will be on days between Monday to Friday, 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM. The successful candidate may be required to adjust shifts as operationally required and may be signed out before 3:30PM as required.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
- Tow trailers, compressors, generators, and other such equipment/items applicable to the work being performed.
- Perform daily safety inspections and maintain accurate logs and records as required.
- Complete pre/post trip inspection reports as required by the City of Vancouver and CVSE (Commercial Vehicle Safety & Enforcement).
- Ensure vehicle is properly and safely loaded/unloaded and the load is safely secured.
- Assist the crew in the performance of a variety of maintenance and construction duties.
- Keep and submit accurate time slips daily, along with written records such as weigh bills, central stores requisitions, Branch forms, etc.
- Effectively carry out verbal and written instructions
- Clean, service and perform minor repairs to the vehicle, and other duties as required.
- Operate a two-way radio for job related activities using proper, brief, and concise radio procedures.
- As a representative of the City, interact with supervisors, co-workers, and members of the public in an effective, courteous and respectful manner.
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
- Grade 8 or an equivalent combination of experience and training.
- Minimum 6 months' (1040 hours) experience as a Truck Driver III (Tandem Axle Dump Truck) or higher within the last 3 years and currently on the Sewer Operations Truck Driver II or III spare list.
- Must have Load Securement training or able to obtain it prior to awarding.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Thorough knowledge of the rules of safe operation and of the precautions to avoid accidents in operating large trucks and auxiliary or attached equipment and demonstrated ability to work safely on the job.
- Knowledge of the method and procedures used in transporting heavy materials and equipment.
- Knowledge and ability to adhere to load securement practices.
- Demonstrated mechanical aptitude to ensure equipment is operating properly, and report mechanical issues.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills sufficient to perform the posted duties effectively.
- Demonstrated ability to operate large trucks with attached or auxiliary equipment safely and effectively under difficult driving conditions and other skills applicable to the job.
- Demonstrated ability to learn the requirements of the job in a reasonable amount of time.
- Demonstrated ability to assist crew(s) with all work functions.
- Excellent interpersonal skills are essential along with the ability to create and maintain a functional team and cooperative environment among staff and the public.
- Demonstrated work habits over the last three years.
Drivers License and Record Checks
- A current and valid Class 3 BC Driver’s License with as Air Brakes or higher and a Satisfactory National Safety Code driving record
- 5 years accumulation of no more than 9 points, not in excess of 3 points per single year
- 3 years accumulation of no more than 1 preventable work related driving or equipment operating accident in any single year
- Employees who do not demonstrate a satisfactory driving record will have their application reviewed in more detail

- Copy of your five-year ICBC Commercial Driver’s Abstract (N Print) directly from ICBC dated within 14 days of this posting
- Copy of your five-year ICBC Driver’s Claims History directly from ICBC within 14 days of this posting
- If you have less than five years driving experience in BC, a request must be made for out of province/country abstract and claims history
